• Did You Know?

This past year DCC contributed $15,471 to numerous Social Service agencies, local educational programs, college scholarships, The Civitan International Research Center, and Junior Civitan.

We also funded the purchase of two PCs for our fellow Civitan Club in Ghana so they can bring the wonders of the computer and Internet to their community.

DCC members contributed over 6500 service hours to organizations such as Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico and Adelante. Although we give of our time freely, if this time was to be purchased at minimum wage it represents over $47,000 worth of difference in our community.

Why Civitan?

Civitan logoCivitan is not your typical networking or social group. We’ll all about service. That means we’re here to make a difference; to help people help themselves; and to leave the world a little better than we found it. But, nobody said you couldn’t have fun too!

Duke City Civitan (DCC) meets every Tuesday at recently renovated Radisson (2500 Carlisle Boulevard NE, at I-40) from noon to 1:00, for fellowship and a short program.

For me, the best part of Civitan is that – unlike many other civic groups – we’ve got flexibility and informality. We can choose what activities in which to participate, and when. And, we donate 100% of our time and money – since we’re an all-volunteer group. This flexibility also gives us a chance to broaden our life experience while helping others.” – David Sweetkind, Duke City Civitan member since 2006

Civitan was founded in 1917 by a group of business and professional leaders who were meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, as a part of another national civic club. However, they were concerned about their community and world, and thought that the club focused too much on personal gain, so they decided to form a different group, to build a better world. Today, Civitan is the fastest growing service club in the world and was the first all-male service club to freely admit women to membership (1974.) Duke City Civitan was founded in 1964 and our members average over 800 hours of community service every month.
